That evening, just as the sun was beginning to set, Brie headed to the kitchen to grab a snack and got the fright of her life. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a dark figure lurking at the back door, his image framed in the etched glass. Screaming in fear, she cried, “Sir!”

He burst out of his office. “Are you okay?”

She pointed at the door just as the person knocked.

Sir cautiously headed toward the door and then broke out in relieved laughter, telling Brie, “It’s only Wallace.”

She grasped her chest, willing her racing heart to slow down. “Thank goodness! I was afraid it might be…” She couldn’t finish the thought.

Opening the backdoor, Sir said sternly, “You almost scared Brie to death.”

Faelan wore a troubled expression on his face and Brie saw he was clutching a small white envelope in his hand. Sweeping back his hair nervously, he looked at Brie apologetically. “You mentioned I could visit when I come to the beach to watch the sunset.”

She nodded, taking several deep breaths to calm herself. “That’s right! I certainly did.”

Addressing Sir, he asked, “May I come in, Sir Davis?”

Sir stepped back, gesturing for him to enter. After shutting the door, Sir asked him, “Is everything okay?”

He looked down at the letter in his hand and answered simply, “No.”

Based on his odd behavior, Brie wondered if Kylie’s parents were demanding custodial rights again. Concerned for him, she suggested he sit down in the living room.

“Where’s your daughter?” Brie asked in concern.

“Mary’s watching her,” he muttered as he took a seat on the sofa.

When Faelan looked up at her, he looked completely devastated.

Goosebumps rose on Brie’s skin, and she immediately took a seat beside him. “What happened?”

Faelan closed his eyes, not answering for a moment, and then sighed. “I went to visit Asher today. He hadn’t been returning my calls, and when I talked to Celestia on the phone, I could tell something was seriously wrong. So, I asked Mary to watch Kaylee for me and headed over.”

Faelan frowned. “Asher refused to see me, and nothing I said or did would change his mind.”

Brie nodded. “Marquis is in a very dark place.”

“I gathered that.” Looking at the letter again, he explained, “I almost left their house empty-handed, but Celestia suddenly remembered that she had something that belonged to me and ran to get it.”

He looked grief-stricken when he told her, “She said she ran across it while cleaning her desk, and apologized for not getting it to me sooner.”

Brie’s heart skipped a beat when she looked at the letter, afraid she already knew what it was. Mary had talked to her about it ages ago, but she’d forgotten all about it.

Brie noticed his hand began to shake as he clutched the letter tighter. “It’s a letter from Trevor’s mother. That’s the boy I…” Faelan closed his eyes, forcing himself to say the word aloud, “…killed.”

Brie looked up at Sir, silently asking permission before giving Faelan a hug. While she embraced
